Bergman (1861–1936) was one of Vienna’s leading bronze artists, celebrated for his finely cast figures and detailed hand-applied polychrome decoration. This example shows the characteristic modelling, expressive features and intricate surface painting associated with his workshop.

The bronze shows a merchant in traditional dress examining a chest containing rifles and blades, with additional weapons arranged on the carpet. A Bergman foundry mark is present to the base. Condition is good, with age-appropriate wear to the cold paint.
