19th Century Watercolour of Charles Bridge by Samuel Prout
£ 1,995.00
On offer is a rare 19th century watercolour of the Charles Bridge in Prague by Samuel Prout (1783–1852), one of Britain’s foremost architectural watercolourists. Prout was celebrated for his studies of European cities and was appointed “Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary” to both King George IV and Queen Victoria. His ability to capture historic architecture with atmosphere and precision earned high praise from contemporaries including John Ruskin.
This atmospheric view of the Charles Bridge is executed in watercolour on paper and measures approximately 11 × 8 inches, with a framed size of about 19 × 16 inches. The painting is in good condition for age with small areas of foxing in the sky; the mount also shows foxing typical of antique works. It appears to retain its original frame, which has minor losses but remains visually appealing. A fine and collectable example of Prout’s sought-after European subjects.
