Pair Chinese Hardwood Water Buffalo Carvings Early 20th Century
£ 65.00
On offer is a pair of early 20th-century Chinese hardwood water buffalo carvings, each displaying fine hand-carved detail and glass inset eyes. Carved as a true mirrored pair, they were intentionally made to face one another, a desirable feature in traditional Chinese decorative sculpture. Water buffalo hold strong cultural significance in China, symbolising endurance, prosperity and resilience.
Both figures are mounted on carved wooden bases, bringing each to a display height of approximately 6.5 inches. One carving remains in very good original condition, while the second shows old repairs to a horn, ear and one leg. The rich, polished hardwood shows natural depth of colour and crisp detailing to the bodies, horns and facial features.
A well-crafted complementary pair of Chinese hardwood carvings with strong decorative and cultural appeal.
