Monumental Ottoman Copper & Brass Ceremonial Ewer Ibrik Anatolia Late 19th Century

£ 695.00

A monumental and highly impressive Ottoman copper and brass ceremonial ewer ibrik / Aftaba , Anatolia (Turkey), dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880–1910.

This exceptional piece is hand-raised from multiple sections of heavy-gauge copper, assembled using traditional soldering and brazing techniques, and richly decorated throughout with deep repoussé vegetal and floral motifs. The surface displays a mature, untouched patina consistent with age, with areas of natural oxidation retained in the recesses.

The ewer features a single elongated swan-head (gooseneck) pouring spout, a hallmark of Ottoman metalwork, paired with an exaggerated curved handle terminating in a stabilising ring, designed to counterbalance the weight of the vessel. The tall baluster neck, domed lid, and brass finial complete the classic Ottoman silhouette.

At approximately 32 inches (81 cm) in height and weighing around 5 kg, this piece is of monumental scale, far exceeding ordinary household examples. Ewers of this size were produced as ceremonial, architectural, or elite display objects, rather than for everyday use. The complexity of construction — comprising a dozen or more individually formed components, including a horizontally joined main body with perfectly aligned repoussé decoration — demonstrates a high level of workshop skill.

Importantly, this ewer remains unconverted: it has never been drilled, wired, or altered for use as a lamp, a fate that befell many comparable examples. As such, it retains its integrity as a historic metalwork vessel rather than a decorative lighting object.

Condition

Overall very good original condition for its age. There is one historical repair:
the brass mount securing the handle to the upper neck has had one original rivet replaced with a discreet brass screw. This repair is stable, visually sympathetic, and does not detract from the overall presentation. Aside from this, the piece is original and structurally sound, with no further repairs or modifications.

Summary

  • Origin: Ottoman Empire, Anatolia (Turkey)

  • Date: Late 19th century (c. 1880–1910)

  • Materials: Hand-raised copper with brass mounts

  • Height: approx. 32 inches / 81 cm

  • Weight: approx. 5 kg

  • Condition: Original, unconverted; one minor historical repair as noted

Large, intact Ottoman ewers of this scale are increasingly scarce, particularly examples that have escaped later conversion. This piece would suit a serious private collection, interior installation, or institutional display.
