Antique Brass & Steel Coal Miner’s Midget Safety Lamp – Industrial Heritage

£ 45.00

On offer is a rare and evocative antique brass and steel coal miner’s midget safety lamp, dating to the early 20th century and made in the traditional Davy-style used throughout the British coalfields. Compact at approximately 6 inches high (excluding handle), this small example was once a functional flame safety lamp, used to detect gas underground and to light miners’ working areas. Today, it survives as a powerful emblem of industrial history and craftsmanship.

Crafted from solid brass and iron with a simple cylindrical form and vented bonnet, this antique coal miner’s lamp displays honest age, patina, and the wear of genuine use. It is offered as found — ideal for collectors, restorers, or anyone drawn to authentic relics of the mining era.

🔍 PROVENANCE / MAKER NOTES:
This type of small “midget” flame safety lamp was commonly produced in the early 1900s for miners and inspectors in British coalfields, particularly in South Wales and northern England. The design follows the Davy-style safety principle developed in 1815 by Sir Humphry Davy, incorporating a metal gauze to prevent ignition of explosive gases.
Makers such as Evan Thomas & Williams of Aberdare and Protector Lamp & Lighting Co. of Eccles produced both working and commemorative versions of these lamps. While the maker’s plate is missing on this example, its form and materials are consistent with British manufacture of the period.
