On offer is a vintage glazed ceramic cowboy hat advertising piece made by Hycroft China of Medicine Hat, Alberta. Produced for A. E. Jaques and Sons of Calgary, it is an appealing example of mid twentieth century Canadian advertising ware.

The miniature hat has a shaped brim and raised crown, finished in glossy white glaze. Printed advertising promotes the company as a ladies, men’s and boys’ store and includes its address at 1312 9th Avenue S.E., Calgary, telephone number BR3 5260 and the wording “East of Island Turnoff.”

Hycroft China was established under that name in 1955 following the purchase of Medicine Hat Potteries. The factory became known for pottery, souvenir pieces and advertising ceramics before closing in the late 1980s. Alberta’s historic register confirms this history.
