The expressive modelling and flowing robes reflect the decorative folk art traditions that made Mudman figures popular collectors’ pieces throughout the 20th century.

Chinese Mudman figures originated in the Shiwan pottery region of Guangdong and became well known for their characterful depictions of immortals, scholars, fishermen and Buddhist subjects. This example stands approximately 8 inches tall and retains impressed marks to the base.
