On offer is an early 19th-century porcelain plate produced by the Nantgarw China Works in South Wales, dating to around 1815–1820. Nantgarw porcelain is renowned for its remarkable translucency and exceptionally fine body, the result of an ambitious but commercially fragile production method that led to a high failure rate. As the factory operated for only a short period, surviving marked examples are notably scarce.

This plate is hand-painted with delicate gilded foliage and floral motifs, the decoration applied with the refined detail associated with Nantgarw’s best work. The reverse carries the impressed “Nantgarw CW” mark, a desirable feature as many pieces left the factory without any stamp. The plate measures approximately 215 mm (8.5 inches) in diameter.

Condition is structurally very good with no chips or cracks. There is significant wear to the gilding consistent with its age and early use, as shown in the photographs. A rare and collectible example of Welsh porcelain from one of Britain’s most celebrated early factories.
