On offer is a studio pottery butter bell with cover dating to the 1950s–1960s by the French potter Robert Picault. Working in Vallauris alongside contemporaries such as Picasso, Picault became known for his distinctive turquoise glazes and geometric hand-painted patterns, both of which are clearly expressed in this boldly shaped piece. The form is unusually elaborate, with tiered bands decorated in Picault’s characteristic motifs.

The butter bell stands at approximately 4 inches tall and is in very good condition, showing only one or two tiny flea bites on the rim. A strong and highly recognisable example of Robert Picault’s mid-century studio pottery.
