These promotional badges were associated with James Robertson and Sons, makers of Golden Shred marmalade, and were originally obtained through a token redemption scheme. The character was eventually retired as attitudes towards this racial caricature changed. Today, Robertsons Golly badges are collected as examples of British advertising and social history.
