Original Black and White Photograph Penallta Colliery British Coal
£195.00
On offer is an original black and white photographic print showing Penallta Colliery in South Wales during the British Coal period, dating from approximately 1986 to 1991. The photograph has been removed from the frame and checked and is confirmed as an original period photographic print rather than a later reproduction.
The elevated view records the working colliery with its headframes, substantial industrial buildings and a British Coal vehicle clearly visible in the foreground. Penallta Colliery was one of the important coal mines of the South Wales coalfield and remained operational until its closure in 1991. This Penallta Colliery original photograph therefore records the site during its final working years.
During our research, the comparable historic photographs of Penallta Colliery that we were able to locate were held within museum and archive collections. We did not find another comparable original period photograph readily available on the open market, adding to the interest of this surviving example.
The photographer is unknown. John Cornwell and Oswald Griffiths are both known to have photographed Penallta Colliery and provide possible comparisons, although no photographer attribution can be confirmed for this particular image.
The photograph was acquired locally in 2026 from premises situated on the former Penallta Colliery site, giving it an interesting direct connection with the location it records.
