The painting depicts the shadowed interior of a timber boat shed, looking towards a sunlit shoreline with small sailing boats and distant coastal hills. Signed Leonard Ward to the lower right.

Born in Aston, Birmingham, Leonard Ward studied at Birmingham College of Art and became known for architectural, landscape and coastal watercolours. He exhibited regularly with the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and also exhibited at the Royal Academy. This Leonard Ward watercolour is confidently painted, with strong perspective and an atmospheric contrast between the dark timber interior and coastal view beyond.
