Large Javanese Terracotta Elephant Celengan (Moneybox) – Early 20th Century
£ 175.00
This striking terracotta elephant sculpture is a rare and highly decorative example of the traditional celengan—a break-to-open moneybox originating from Java, Indonesia. Standing approximately 16 inches tall by 16 inches long, it features an intricate design of stylized swirls, feathers, and facial details inspired by the famed Majapahit artistic tradition.
🐘 History & Craftsmanship
Terracotta coin banks of this type have a long-standing cultural lineage, dating back to the 14th–15th century Majapahit Empire. Elephants, while rarer than the more common boar or bull forms, were sometimes depicted in ceremonial celengan used for savings or offerings. This example likely dates from the early to mid-20th century, made by local artisans continuing this historical practice in the regions of Yogyakarta or East Java.
It includes a traditional coin slot at the top, but no opening to retrieve coins—true to the original celengan design, where the bank was meant to be smashed open once full.
🖐 Handmade Detail
Rich reddish-brown terracotta
Stylized carved motifs with deeply incised scrollwork and defined eyes, trunk, and ears
Hollow interior with coin slot (no stopper or opening—intended to break)

Structurally sound with visible restoration:
Repairs to one ear, the tail, and one foot
Chips to ear and base, as well as minor surface cracks visible in the photos

These pieces were often crafted for local use or ceremonial purposes, and this particular example shows clear signs of being hand-molded rather than machine-pressed, as seen in the organic texture and uneven detailing—hallmarks of authentic Indonesian terracotta work.
