On offer is a vintage Penallta Lodge NUM mining plate produced in fine bone china by Edwardian Fine Bone China. Dating to 1991, it commemorates Penallta Colliery and records its years of operation from 1906 to 1991. The centre shows the colliery buildings, surrounded by named views of other South Wales collieries and a gold coloured rim.

The reverse carries the maker’s backstamp and a detailed account of Penallta Colliery, including its production history, the miners’ strike and its closure as the last deep mine operating in the Rhymney Valley. It also confirms that the plate belongs to a limited edition, although no individual edition number is shown. Edwardian Fine Bone China of Stoke on Trent produced commemorative ceramics recording British history and regional heritage. This Penallta Lodge NUM mining plate is an appealing piece of Welsh coal mining and trade union memorabilia.
