Victorian Brass or Bronze Bell with Russian Bear and Hemony Inscription
£95.00
On offer is a rare Victorian cast brass or bronze bell featuring a finely modelled standing bear holding a shield, a motif often associated with Russian heraldic symbolism. The bell is richly decorated with detailed relief scenes around the body and carries the inscription “F. Hemony Me Fecit Anno 1565”, a clear 19th-century homage to the celebrated 17th-century Dutch bell founders François and Pieter Hemony, renowned for their innovations in tuned carillon production. Although Victorian in manufacture, this piece reflects the historical admiration for the Hemony foundries and their legacy in European bell making.
The bell stands approximately 8 inches tall. The internal clapper is missing, but the exterior remains in good antique condition with age-appropriate wear and an attractive patina.
A distinctive and decorative example of Victorian metalwork referencing notable European bell-founding history.
