Conta and Boehme were among Germany’s leading porcelain manufacturers during the nineteenth century, becoming well known for their humorous fairings and finely modelled novelty figures that were exported throughout Europe and beyond. This delightful example is from the Mr Top Hat series and depicts the character seated on a sugar scuttle.

Traditionally these porcelain scuttles were made to hold sugar with a small shovel resting across the top, although similar examples have also been used as novelty salts or match holders. The piece is finished with hand painted floral decoration and measures approximately 4 inches high and 3.5 inches long. It remains in good antique condition with only minor flea bite fretting to the applied flowers, consistent with its age. A charming Victorian porcelain fairing that will appeal to collectors of German porcelain and novelty ceramics.
