Antique Jasperware Lidded Jar – English Cobalt Tobacco Humidor
£ 40.00
On offer is a rare and beautifully detailed late 19th to early 20th-century English Jasperware container, likely used as a tobacco jar or humidor. This stunning piece is crafted in the neoclassical style made famous by Wedgwood, featuring exquisite applied white relief figures against a rich, deep cobalt blue ground.
The base is clearly impressed “Jasper – S – England”, dating this piece to between 1890 and 1910, during the height of the English ceramic revival period. Though stylistically similar to Wedgwood, this is not a Wedgwood-marked piece, making it an even rarer find—possibly from one of the high-quality competing potteries producing fine Jasperware during the same era.
The surface features a continuous scene in high-relief white classical figures, depicting a rural hunting or countryside vignette: two men, hounds, horses, trees, and floral borders rendered in exquisite low- and high-relief. The craftsmanship is particularly refined, with noticeably translucent white reliefs that contrast beautifully with the matte cobalt body—an indicator of quality production and detailed hand-finishing.

🔎 Historical Context:
Jasperware is a type of unglazed stoneware introduced by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s, characterized by its soft matte finish and neoclassical white relief decorations. By the late 19th century, several other English manufacturers had adopted the style due to its popularity, often using very similar techniques and materials. This example, marked simply Jasper England, is part of that broader tradition and is highly sought after by collectors of English decorative arts, neoclassical ceramics, and tobacco-related antiques.
