On offer is a hand carved wooden bear spill holder, supplied as an antique Black Forest carving dating from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. Standing approximately 7.5 inches tall, it depicts a bear leaning over a hollow tree stump surrounded by carved foliage.

The bear’s coat, face and paws are individually carved, while the hollow stump was intended to hold spills, matches or similar fireside items. Black Forest carving is a recognised collecting term strongly associated with the woodcarving industry around Brienz in Switzerland, where bears and other Alpine animals became popular decorative subjects.
