Budai, often known as the Laughing Buddha, has long been regarded in Chinese culture as a symbol of happiness, abundance and good fortune. Champlevé enamelling was widely used during the Qing Dynasty, with vibrant enamel colours applied into recessed areas of the metal to create richly decorative works.

A particularly interesting feature of this example is its sealed base, as many comparable figures have lost their base plate over time. Traditionally these figures often contained prayer scrolls or sacred contents, and the intact base suggests these may still remain undisturbed. The figure displays age related verdigris and a few small dents consistent with its age, while the original carved hardwood stand has a split and minor chips. The stand measures approximately 3.5 inches tall and 4.25 inches wide.
