Rare Kangxi Chinese Imari Plate – 17th Century Porcelain (As-Is)

£ 75.00

On offer is a rare and historically important late 17th to early 18th-century Chinese Imari porcelain plate, dating from the Kangxi period (circa 1662–1722). This large and decorative piece, measuring approximately 10.5 inches in diameter, is a fine early example of export porcelain created for the European market, showcasing the distinctive blue underglaze with iron-red and gilt overglaze enamels typical of Chinese Imari ware.

The plate features a central landscape panel with traditional Chinese architecture, framed by scalloped lobes and alternating panels of floral and fan motifs—an aesthetic hallmark of the Kangxi era. Despite its age and elegance, this piece is offered in as-is condition due to several notable flaws:

  • A V-shaped chip to the rim

  • A 2-inch section of chipping with accompanying hairlines

  • Additional fritting and smaller rim nicks

These faults, however, do not detract from its display value, and the piece remains a rare opportunity for collectors, restorers, or anyone looking to study authentic Kangxi porcelain up close. Over 300 years old, it is a survivor from a pivotal era of Chinese ceramic artistry.

📚 Historical Note:
Chinese Imari ware—named after the Japanese port through which such items often passed—was produced extensively during the Kangxi period for export to Europe. These pieces combined Chinese blue-and-white porcelain traditions with overglaze enamels to meet Western decorative tastes. Surviving pieces, especially from the late 1600s, are highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
