Pair of Oriental Bronze Vases – Pegasus & Floral Motif – c.20th C

£ 65.00

On offer is a striking and beautifully detailed pair of 20th-century Oriental bronze or brass vases, polished to a soft sheen and decorated with intricately engraved designs. These vases are believed to be of Chinese origin, and while unmarked in English, they each bear matching character marks on the base, indicating they were made as a true pair.

The body of each vase is adorned with a mythical Pegasus figure in mid-flight, a symbol often associated with power, transcendence, and poetic inspiration in both Eastern and Western traditions. Surrounding this are stylized butterflies, blossoms, and scrolling floral motifs, framed in bordered cartouches reminiscent of traditional Chinese textile and metalwork designs.

Both vases stand just over 5 inches tall, with rounded shoulders and short necks. The upper rims are clean and unornamented, allowing the elaborate engraved imagery on the body to stand out. These would have been made in the early-to-mid 20th century, likely for the decorative export market or domestic use in wealthier Chinese households.

Condition is very good overall, with a polished, warm bronze or brass patina and clear engraving. One vase has a noticeable dent on the main body (see images), but this does not detract from its decorative value or rarity.

✅ Engraved Pegasus, butterfly, and floral motifs
✅ Matching character marks on base – likely Chinese origin

About Chinese Bronze & Brass Decorative Vessels:

Bronze and brass have long played a central role in Chinese decorative arts, used historically for both ritual and domestic purposes. By the 20th century, engraved or cast bronze vases became popular export pieces, especially those incorporating traditional iconography like mythical beasts, butterflies (symbolizing joy and transformation), and blooming flowers (often representing longevity and beauty).

This pair combines these timeless motifs into a highly decorative, symbolically rich set that reflects both traditional craftsmanship and mid-20th-century aesthetics.
