Artist Background:
George Barret Jr., the son of the prominent Irish landscape artist George Barret Sr., was a leading figure in the British watercolour tradition. A founding member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1804, his work was widely collected in the early 19th century and is held in numerous public collections including the British Museum and the V&A. He was celebrated for his atmospheric landscapes and seascapes, particularly those bathed in the ethereal light of dawn or dusk.
Signature and Provenance:
This painting is not signed on the front, which is not uncommon for Barret’s works, particularly those created for exhibitions or private collections. However, it comes with documented provenance from The Fine Art Society Ltd., one of the UK’s most prestigious dealers in British art, established in 1876. A gallery label affixed to the reverse confirms the artist’s name, title (Sunset), and date of purchase – November 1974, stock no. 12658.
Perfect for:
Collectors of early British art, lovers of Romantic landscape painting, or anyone seeking a genuine piece of 19th-century artistic heritage. This is a rare opportunity to own an original work with both historical significance and compelling visual power.
Don’t miss out on this museum-worthy painting with impeccable provenance — a true gem for any serious collector.
