Antique Ebony and Sterling Silver Swagger Stick or Baton Rhymney Glee Society 1899

£ 145.00

On offer here is a victorian late 19th-century sterling silver-mounted ebony swagger stick or conductors baton. I can not decide what this is supposed to be, The top is engraved Presented to F Purnell by the Rhymney Raily Glee Society Jan 28th, 1899. When you search the history of the Rhymney Glee Society, you find that they entered and won an Eisteffordd in 1899. I am not sure if this was presented to Mr. Purnell to take the choir to the Eisteffordd or because he won.  It may have been presented as a swagger stick or a baton however I feel it is a little long for a baton at approx 20 inches. the condition is good with no damage or splits.  The silver is fully hallmarked for Birmingham makers mark William Williams.
