Antique Burmantofts Sang de Boeuf Oxblood Vase Lamp, Signed Stoneware

£ 345.00

On offer is a truly exceptional antique Burmantofts vase, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, crafted in richly glazed stoneware and later sensitively converted into a table lamp. This unique piece is finished in a deep sang de boeuf glaze, also known as oxblood — a copper-red glaze inspired by Qing dynasty Chinese ceramics and rarely achieved with this level of success in Western pottery.

Originally a standalone vase, the piece is now fitted with mid-century brass lamp hardware that mirrors the natural, softly undulating rim. The glaze is a masterwork of reduction firing: rich crimson to wine-red tones, with subtle purples and darker pooling near the base. Sculptural pinched lobes or “wings” at the lower body give the form an organic elegance, reinforcing its artisan origins.

Whether displayed as a dramatic accent in a curated space or kept as a collector’s treasure, this lamp carries both artistic and historical resonance.

📌 Key Features:

✅ Authentic glazed stoneware – produced in Leeds by Burmantofts Pottery
✅ Rare sang de boeuf glaze – deep, variegated red achieved via copper oxide in reduction firing
Sculptural hand-thrown form – asymmetrical lobes and natural top rim
Signed to base – faint BURMANTOFTS LEEDS stamp beneath glaze
✅ Condition: Excellent antique condition – only minimal age-related chips to the foot rim
✅ Rich original surface – unpolished, showcasing depth and age
✅ Converted to lamp – carefully retrofitted mid-20th century with brass cap and socket

💡 Styling Tip:

Use as a statement piece in a traditional, eclectic, or mid-century interior. Works beautifully on a console, bedside table, or display niche — even unlit, the glaze alone commands attention.

🎁 Perfect For:

✔️ Collectors of British art pottery or antique lighting
✔️ Lovers of unusual historical ceramics
✔️ Thoughtful gift for design aficionados or ceramic historians
✔️ Interior designers sourcing rare, meaningful decor objects

🔍 Provenance / Maker Notes:

Produced by Burmantofts Pottery, a celebrated Leeds-based firm active from 1859 to 1957. This piece likely dates to their art pottery peak (c.1880–1904), when they pioneered the adaptation of Chinese glaze traditions such as sang de boeuf in Western stoneware. The impressed BURMANTOFTS LEEDS mark is faint but present under the glaze on the base.

The form, glaze, and condition of this piece mark it as a rare surviving example — particularly uncommon in this sculptural, asymmetrical shape.
