Antique Black Forest Bear Carved Spill Vase – Handcrafted Wood Art

£ 55.00

On offer is a rare and charming Black Forest hand-carved wooden bear spill vase, a fine example of 19th to early 20th-century alpine craftsmanship. Standing at approximately 7.5 inches tall, this beautifully carved bear leans attentively over a tree stump-form vessel, traditionally used to hold spills (thin wooden sticks used to transfer fire from hearth to candle or pipe).

This exquisite piece is carved in deep relief from a single solid block of wood, likely linden (lime) wood, which was a preferred material for Black Forest woodworkers due to its softness and even grain. The bear’s fur is rendered with remarkable textural detail, and its expressive face shows the distinct hand-carved characteristics associated with Black Forest carving from the Brienz region of Switzerland or southern Germany, an area renowned for such works from the mid-1800s onward.

These carvings were originally sold as luxury souvenirs to wealthy European travelers during the Grand Tour era. Today, they are highly sought after by collectors of folk art, rustic décor, and antique woodenware, often admired for their whimsical yet lifelike detail.
