Antique Victorian Glass Dump Paperweight – Cased Mushroom – Rare 19th Century Hand-Blown Glass
£ 75.00
On offer is a rare and authentic 19th-century English Victorian glass dump paperweight, a striking and heavy example of early hand-blown glass craftsmanship. This large paperweight features a cased internal mushroom design, a classic and desirable motif in antique dump weights of the period.
Crafted in deep bottle-green glass, the paperweight exhibits a rich tone and natural trapped air bubbles that highlight its age and handmade nature. The underside has a large, rough snapped pontil, consistent with 19th-century glassworking methods, indicating it was likely made in a small-scale glasshouse — possibly by workers in the industrial North of England, where many of these charming “dump” weights originated.
This example measures approximately 4.5 inches tall, making it one of the larger and more impressive examples of its kind. It has multiple surface bruises and marks consistent with its age and utility, which only add to its historic charm. These types of glass dumps were often made by glassworkers at the end of their shifts using leftover molten glass — a form of creative expression during the Victorian period. Because each piece is entirely hand-blown, no two are ever identical. This example, with its internal mushroom form, is especially sought after.
