19th Century Welsh Pottery Jug – Swansea Glamorgan c.1835

£ 65.00

On offer is a highly sought-after 19th-century Welsh pottery jug, attributed to the Swansea potteries in Glamorgan, and dating to approximately circa 1835. This charming antique is a wonderful example of early Welsh folk pottery, known for its bold floral decoration and regional character.

Crafted in a gently bulbous form with a high-arched handle and scalloped rim, this jug features a striking hand-painted floral pattern in iron red, cobalt blue, and leafy green, with the floral sprays rendered in a manner typical of early 19th-century Welsh decorative styles. The underglaze painting remains vivid and expressive, even after nearly two centuries.

This piece measures approximately 6.5 inches tall and is in very good condition for its age. There is a small glaze chip on the side of the handle (clearly visible in the images) and some light age-related staining on the front and base—common in pottery of this age and adding to its authentic antique charm.

Welsh pottery from this era, especially from the Swansea potteries, is highly collectible due to its regional significance, limited production, and richly decorative aesthetic. These pieces rarely come to market in such complete and displayable condition.
